Blatant racism (apartheid) and misogyny
I think this is unintentional racism due to poor projection of design. The left side of the image is supposed to portray how a Denny’s ad would have looked 60 years ago, due to them celebrating their 60 year anniversary.
Most men you see in ads from the 1950s era (Denny’s was founded in 1953), are clothed in business uniform attire with the larger glasses and combed over hair. Everyone read newspapers, it was the main source of news, as found in the mans hand. The child has short hair, and looks over-enthusiastic about his dessert, another factor found in ads from that era. Also, the logo at the bottom on the left-hand side is their old logo.
Now on the right-side, they take a more modern, 2013-style ad choice to show today. The man is more casual, as in most ads today. He doesn’t have a particular hair style. The child is dressed more comfortably (not necessarily, but in my opinion, that would be more confortable) with medium-length hair, something you would have never seen in ads. also, modern logo at the bottom. and I think it’s good that the modern family isn’t white.
White family on the left, not racist, factual, in my opinion as a graphic designer. If I’m getting from this image what the designer was trying to portray, I see what they were trying to do, but they could have done a better job.
Don’t call racism on everything you see, until you know what they’re trying to show.
Fucking tumblr ladies and gentlemen.
is it wrong that i completely understood the ad’s motive at first glance - the racial makeup of the typical american has completely changed and i thought it was really poignant actually that it shows fathers taking their sons out for dinner instead of showing the traditional role of women with children
i thought the point was just then and now and two dads smiling at their kids enjoying some fucking dennys.
tumblr needs to learn it’s also damaging to fling around accusations of racism ignorantly. don’t be so quick to say things are racist. I’m a poc and I liked it that they used a non-white father and son duo in the second picture- I mean the whole going to a diner and drinking a milkshake has a very American association- suggesting that the modern, far more diverse country today is just as 100% American as the 1950s old school Americana.
